Farm Bureau opposes Denham recall

Concluding that a June 2008 recall measure to remove Senator Jeff Denham from office is completely without merit, Monterey County Farm Bureau directors voted at their April meeting to oppose the recall.

Farm Bureau directors concluded that Denham was targeted because he refused last summer to vote for a state budget that he said was out of balance.  Subsequent events, they said, proved Denham right, when the state admitted it has a $16 billion deficit.

Directors noted that every major newspaper in the district opposes the recall.

“There is no legitimate reason to recall Senator Denham,” said Jeff Pereira, Farm Bureau vice president for legislative affairs.  “Legislators should have listened to Denham and others who called for fiscal caution.

“This recall is unnecessary and unwarranted.  It doesn’t follow the real purpose of the recall.  It’s sleazy politics.”

Supervisor and former Assemblyman Simon Salinas – who is in the second year of his first four-year term representing District 3, which includes the Salinas Valley and South County -- is the only candidate to file papers for election to the seat if Denham is recalled.

If a majority of voters approve the recall, Salinas will immediately replace Denham for the remaining two years of his term in the Senate, leaving the third supervisorial seat vacant.  If that happens, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger would appoint a new supervisor, as he recently did to fill a vacancy in the fourth district.

Denham will be termed out of the Senate in 2010.
